These communities lie around the small but pretty Deer Lake. Also included here is Deer Lake Place (Douglas) to the north of the lake, Upper Deer Lake to the south, with Morely and Buckingham Heights to the southeast. The neighbourhood is home to Burnaby's city hall and most municipal services. The community is served by the Royal Oak SkyTrain station to the south.
These neighbourhoods are mostly low density single-family homes, with higher density housing closer to Oakland Street in the south.
The community is served by 4 elementary schools, and Burnaby Central High, with a library close-by at Metrotown. Post secondary students are adjacent to the campus of BCIT, though Simon Fraser and UBC are a distance away by road or transit.
The community has a number of shopping streets traversing it, and is close to the shopping at Metrotown to the south and Brentwood Mall to the north.
The community is centered around the pretty Deer Lake and the surrounding park, which has recreational trails and is home to Burnaby Heritage Village & Carrousel, the Gallery at Ceperly House, the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. These neighbourhoods also have close access to the Boathouse on Burnaby Lake and the indoor pool and ice arena overlooking Burnaby Lake.
